Dear friends and neighbours, ‘It’s a boy!’ In the words of the carol; ‘The virgin Mary had a baby boy.’ What gift do you give a new born baby?
In the bible, the story of the birth of Jesus unfolds and he is visited by the Wise Men who bring him gifts of Gold, frankincense and myrrh. Someone once said that if Jesus had been visited by Wise Women instead of Wise Men, they would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped to deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole and brought practical gifts. Gold, frankincense and myrrh are not the kind of gifts that we would give a baby in this day and age, but there could well be significance and meaning in the gifts given to Jesus by the Wise men.
Gold is a precious metal and often associated with royalty. The bible says that Jesus is the King of kings. Gold points to Jesus as King.
Frankincense is a white resin or gum and is highly fragrant when burned and was often used in worship. The gift of frankincense points to Jesus who would become an offering to God.
Myrrh symbolizes bitterness and suffering. The gift of myrrh points to Jesus who would suffer greatly in adulthood.
Jesus is God’s gift of himself to the world, to you and to me.
‘God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.’ What does this mean for the world, for you and for me today?
At Burniston Methodist Church we believe that Jesus has great meaning and makes a very real difference and our Christmas services are celebrations of God’s wonderful gift. Come and join us, come and join the celebrations. God bless you and your family and friends this Christmas. Rev Graham Morgan
