Just after Easter 2011 we had this brilliant idea of joining with a whole pile of other young people to go out to Mexico with Urban Saints (formerly Crusaders) at Easter 2012 to build a 2 bedroomed house (from scratch) in ten days. No building experience required (just as well) and we get to hand the keys over to a Mexican family who would otherwise be homeless or paying extortionate rent. We weren’t sure how many people would be up for going and said that anyone wanting to go needed to be 14+ (The four leaders are considerably more than 14!)

Very excitingly 13 young people aged 14 – 19 said they really wanted to go and so that the financial contribution that each has to pay (£1200) wasn’t a bar  we decided that we would do all the fundraising together.. This has taken various forms to date

  • first saturday in the month Car washes @the chapel  £5 per car done cheerfully and well in all winds and weathers
  • meals and entertainment evenings
  • Quiz night
  • Sponsored air mile sheets
  • sponsored walk up Ben Nevis
  • Sponsored go Karting evening @Eastfield
  • Christmas meal
  • Christmas concert by our own Singing for Fun group (14th Dec @7pm)
  • Jumble sale
  • Begging letters

Keep looking at this site for future events.

The young people have been absolutely great and we are all getting used to each other’s idiosyncrasies which is going t obe fairly essential given that we spend the 10 days CAMPING!!!! in a secure compound with minimal water (ok for those of us who aren’t bothered about hygiene). We have all recently had our jabs and the leaders are due to go to a meeting for those groups from the north who are going in January. (And that’s when we really get the truth of what it is like. We keep on giving the young people the opportunity to back off but they just go and send off for their passports)

The whole trip is billed as an unforgettable life changing experience both practically and spiritually, so we would very much value your prayers for all of us going and of course any donations (however small)are always welcome and can be handed in at the chapel. So far we have raised £12500 (since July) and so another £7500 to go by beginning of March.
