Away weekend/125th Anniversary of BB camping

The 4th Scarborough BB has been running for around 15 years, it has always been quite a small Company in a relatively small village,

largely for this reason the Company has never arranged its own residential visit before and has usually joined up with other BB Companies for residential trips in the past.

Having come fresh out of a BB Residential Training Course, new Captain, Georgette Donoghue decided it was time the 4th ventured off on their own for the first time. The Company has seen a steady growth in recent years and having asked the boys, there was a real enthusiasm for the trip.
Of course there were many exotic locations that could have been considered but it was eventually decided to go to…Hull! It was thought that a 1 hour drive and 12 very excited boys with 6 relatively inexperienced staff/helpers was challenging enough. The intrepid travellers set off in the hired mini bus (many thanks to the Scarborough Lions Club!) and car convoy…and immediately stopped for a toilet break! They eventually arrived at the Melton Bottoms Scout Camp on the outskirts of Hull. This couldn’t have been a more fabulous location! Excellent bunk, dorm and kitchen facilities set in its own private wood with outdoor mini assault course and campfire circle…a boys heaven!
The weekend consisted of: assault course challenges, torchlight woodland walks, games, football, hot chocolate & marshmallows, spaggetti, cakes, archery, military museum, picnic, ice skating, 10bin bowling, burgers, campfire songs, more hot chocolate and marshmallows and a visit to The Deep!
Eventually 12 very tired boys and 6 even more exhausted staff/helpers returned home on Sunday evening. The story of the weekend was retold by the boys in sketch form at the Annual Display Night where each one was presented with their 125th Year of Camping badge and certificate – a very proud moment for all!

…the next trip is being planned as we speak!

  1. Well done captain ,well done helpers and best of all well done to the intrepid boys. Reading the report and looking at the photographs it clearly shows that you will have had an excellent time. Its great to read your big adventure and to realise how lucky you have been.
